Open access webinar: Management of dyslipidaemia in Africa 2022
It is a great privilege to announce, on January 21st, the first joint webinar by EAS and EAVA, LASSA, Nigeria Cardiac Society & Tunisian Heart Foundation focusing on the Management of Dyslipidemia in Africa. The webinar is the first step in the process of building a broader and fruitful collaboration between EAS and African National Scientific Societies interested in atherosclerosis and cardiovascular disease. EAS in collaboration with African National Scientific Societies will be able to provide a wide range of opportunities to collaborate both from clinical and scientific standpoint, including lipid clinic networking, fellowship programs, mentorship of young colleagues, webinars, advanced courses, clinical consensus position papers, and guidelines.
This first webinar will focus on practical clinical aspects related to the management of dyslipidemia in the African region, including an overview on risk factors in developing countries, how to recognize and diagnose different forms of dyslipidemia based on the lipid analysis, and finally a look at Familial Hypercholesterolemia with an update of the worldwide situation.
A selection of papers related to these topics will be available on the webinar website.
EAS has the privilege to host outstanding experts from the region including Prof. Ashraf Reda from Egypt, President of EAVA, Prof. David Marais from South Africa, which will be moderated by Prof. Habib Gamra President of the Tunisian Heart Foundation, Prof. Okechukwu Ogah, President of the Nigerian Cardiac Society, and Prof. Alexandros Tselepis, member of the executive committee of the Hellenic Atherosclerosis Society. As part of the scientific program, Prof. Kausik Ray, President of EAS, will provide an overview of FH worldwide.
On behalf of EAS and EAVA, LASSA, Nigeria Cardiac Society & Tunisian Heart Foundation we invite you to participate in the webinar and the future joint initiatives of EAS and African National Scientific Societies.
EAS 2022 Congress in Milan, Italy – Open for early registration now!
On behalf of the European Atherosclerosis Society (EAS) and the Italian Atherosclerosis Society we are proud to invite you to participate in the 90th EAS Congress in the beautiful city of Milano, Italy. We now welcome applications from EAS members who wish to join the group starting up in 2022. Participants will be selected for their scientific excellence, based on their application. Members seeking to apply should be early in their career, aged under 40, and should have made some progress in basic or clinical research, with at least one publication. A firm commitment to follow a career in the field of atherosclerosis and related disease is required.

Reducing Bureaucracy in Clinical Trials: Coalition Recommendations
In September 2020 a broad cross-disciplinary coalition of medical societies and patient advocates issued the joint statement ‘Reducing bureaucracy in clinical trials: now is the time!’
The statement calls for urgent action to make clinical trials less bureaucratic and more patient-centered, efficient and cheaper. At stake is the quality of clinical trials, access to innovative treatments, and, crucially, patient safety.
The Coalition calls on regulators, policymakers, sponsors, ethics committees, and other stakeholders to collaborate to make sure regulatory guidelines, safety reporting requirements and informed consent procedures do not harm what they are meant to protect: clinical trial quality and patient safety.
Over the past year, the Coalition has developed a series of concrete and consensus-based recommendations for reducing administrative burdens in clinical trials, laid out below in four clusters: safety reporting, informed consent, regulatory guidelines, and harmonisation of requirements across the EU.
Featured Open Lecture: Macrophage immunometabolism in atherosclerosis
This is an initiative from the Society to highlight our online educational platform EAS ACADEMY. Every other month we select one interesting lecture from a recent course or congress and make it available for free, to members and non-members.
In this elegant lecture, Ira Tabas (Professor of medicine, cell biology, and physiology at Columbia University NY NY) shows how a deficiency in efferocytosis may be a driver of plaque instability.
By manipulating arginine intracellular metabolism he demonstrates that it is possible, at least in vitro, to improve efferocytosis and subsequently cause plaque regression. In our view, this inspiring lecture may open appealing perspectives for both scientists and clinicians.
